I am currently writing an essay for a university art gallery exhibition catalog about how the early nineteenth-century invention of photography marked a change in art and spiritual consciousness; and thus dwelling on the postindustrial trajectories of art and science. I have so many extra notions that I created this separate cloud of thought. Apologies if this musing seems too general. Cheese and crackers in the boardroom? Standard fare.

Puppetry and handwriting analysis? Not so much. Nonetheless, there was a line out the door of the boardroom at the Marriott Hotel in Los Angeles, where the Council on Foundations’ annual conference was taking place. Conferees awaited their personalized encounter with the LA-based arts group the Machine Project, which was also offering mind-reading workshops, cheese music, and concerts of Renaissance lute and vocal music.

Dynamic Adaptability: Arts and Culture Puget Sound was a series of conferences for cultural sector leaders sponsored by a consortium of five funders in the Puget Sound: The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, The Boeing Company, 4Culture, Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs and The Seattle Foundation. This initiative was a response to a March 2009 study about the effects of the recession on area cultural institutions and their needs at this time.
