On the cover:
In celebration of twenty-five years of publishing the GIA Reader, we commissioned the digital artwork on the cover of this issue from Seattle mixed media artist Iskra Johnson. She says about her work, “I use the information captured in the camera to mask and layer scanned textures made with paint, charcoal and powdered pigment. For me Photoshop is like playing jazz: it is the ultimate tool for improvisation. It allows me to deconstruct images into layers of light and color, line and shape, and reassemble them. The way the layers interact with each other opens up a new kind of pictorial composition unavailable in any other medium.”
Articles shown in gray are not yet available online, but are available in the print edition. Contact GIA to order copies of the Reader or submit this form to subscribe.
