In the election on November 6th, 2012, Portland, Oregon residents approved ballot measure #26-146 with 62% voting to approve. The success of the measure means a new income tax of $35 per income-earning resident will generate an estimated $12.5 million every year, starting in 2013 to be dispersed to Portland schools and to the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) to fund the arts and music and art education.

The U.S. Department of Education announced on July 31 the award of more than $1.2 million in grants to school districts in California, Florida, Nevada and New York to train arts educators serving high-poverty schools.

Under the Arts in Education-Professional Development for Arts Educators program, the funds will support high-quality model training programs in elementary and secondary education for music, dance, drama, media arts, or visual arts. The grants are especially targeted at schools with students from low-income backgrounds.
