New CAE Report Shows Significant Decline in NYC K-12 Arts Education Funding
(7-2-10) A June 2010 report on dramatic declines in arts education funding in New York public schools prompted a July 1 story in The NY Daily News that begins: "It is not a pretty picture."
The report, a research and policy briefing published by the Center for Arts Education (CAE), presents the results of the organization's independent analysis of arts education data collected from the city's DOE, ArtsCount, and the Annual Arts in Schools Reports. The CAE found that the budget to hire the services of arts and culture organizations has dropped 31% since the 2006-07 school year, the budget for supplies (art supplies, musical instruments and equipment) has dropped 68% in the same period, and, importantly, these and other declines began before the onset of the current economic downturn.
