Australians are appreciating a vibrant arts culture and showing it via their chequebooks. A survey of corporate and private philanthropy to Australia’s 28 major performing arts companies reveals that in 2008 individual support through bequests, gifts of money and prescribed private funds had increased from 2004 by 119 per cent to $20 million.

Fundraising events accounted for a further $2.5m towards the total private giving amount.

The Australian Major Performing Arts Group’s survey, Tracking Changes in Corporate Sponsorship and Private Donations, reveals the 28 companies’ private and corporate income over five years totalled $49.6m last year, an increase of $11.8m since 2004. After two consecutive years of decline, corporate sponsorship increased only slightly, by $1.8m last year to $27.1m.
