UPSIDE TO RECESSION FOR ARTS ORGS?

“We talked about how the recession is affecting the arts and what the future might hold. I conjectured that smaller and more non-traditional arts groups may have opportunities that arise because of the economy. For instance, theater or rehearsal space that might have been out of reach for a tiny dance company may suddenly be more affordable if its usual renters cut down on productions or performances.

South Street developers Howard Lander and Steve Giannascoli are donating at least a half-dozen vacant storefronts to arts groups to use as gallery space and “creative incubators” — until the economy improves. The plan, hatched by merchants Julia Zagar (Eyes Gallery) and Bill Curry (Copabanana), have groups paying utilities but no rent for two months, with a month-to-month renewal option, says Curry.” Read More.
