April/May Movement Strategy Center Spotlight

Founded in Oakland, Calif., in 2001 by movement leaders and activists, Movement Strategy Center (MSC) is a movement support nonprofit that provides equitable intermediary services for communities. Over the years, we have cultivated a strong ecosystem of diverse movement actors working at the frontlines of dismantling intersectional issues of injustice.

Understanding that artists — particularly those who embed their practice in place-based organizing — are critical to shifting and shaping what is possible for movements toward more just and equitable communities, we’re excited to launch a new initiative through the support of the Hewlett Foundation. Launching in spring 2025, our two-year pilot program will bring artists and organizers across the San Francisco Bay Area into both place-based and regional conversations with the stated aim of building the power of artists to advance a shared vision for a thriving future, and to creatively solve for the issues most impacting their lives.

We’re also excited to continue investing in arts and culture groups who are building the Solidarity Economy through our partnership with art.coop and the Remember the Future Fellowship. The inaugural fellowship provides six collectives across the nation with $15,000 each, as well as access to a technical assistance fund for the year. These groups  are building the Solidarity Economy movement and inspiring new economic practices of shared power and shared wealth.

As recent members to the GIA community, we look forward to collaborating to redistribute wealth, resources, and power to artists advancing equitable and regenerative pathways forward.
