In New York, “Artists Struggle Without Mayor”
(7-20-10) Despite signals in 2008 that funding would end after a two-year grant period, New York arts organizations are struggling to fill gaps in their budgets created by the discontinuance of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's grantmaking program (administered by the Carnegie Corp. of New York). Some of the organizations polled for Erica Orden's Wall Street Journal article will need to compensate for up to 20% of total funding and are responding by making operating cuts or seeking out new revenue streams. Hopeful eyes have turned to Bloomberg's private foundation, which, in recent months, has added several key administrators and new board members, including First Deputy Mayor Patricia Harris as chairwoman and chief executive. Harris, who oversees the Department of Cultural Affairs in her city job, also played a role in the distribution of the Carnegie grants.
