Relive the 2019 GIA Conference: Gregg Deal

Gregg Deal (Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe) is a provocative contemporary artist who challenges Western perceptions of Indigenous people, touching on issues of race, history, and stereotypes. Through his art, Deal critically examines issues and tells stories of decolonization and appropriation that affect Indian country. He explored those topics at his keynote during the Tuesday Luncheon Plenary of the 2019 GIA Conference. Tariana Navas-Nieves of Denver Arts & Venues introduced him.

An exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art brings together works from the BMA’s collection “to demonstrate the critical role of women in shaping and maintaining social identities across 20th-century Africa,” the museum details…
