In the Fall 2018 issue of the GIA Reader, as part of the “My Oakland” series, reverend Marvin K. White shares a prayer for Oakland, the city he says is “buried over by unaffordable luxury apartments and gutted out of once black-owned row houses and Victorian homes.” White says that when he chose to be a writer, he could not imagine his work “would be to surface, dig up, and rush into buildings earmarked as ‘blight’ and slated to be demolished, to pull the poems and the stories out before they were reduced to rubble.” Read “A Praisesong for West Oakland” here.

Philanthropy-serving organizations (PSOs), often referred to as affinity organizations (AO) or membership organizations (MO), hold a unique position in the nonprofit-sector. These types of organizations gather insights and aggregate information on both the nonprofit field and the funder-response to those needs. Grantmakers in the Arts provides information, resources, and leadership to funders of artists and arts organizations. A 2017 United Philanthropy Forum study revealed that national and regional PSOs reported a median 93 percent membership renewal rate, but why?

In a recent report on how funders are collecting and using demographic data PEAK Grantmaking learned that about half of grantmakers are collecting this data. “Of that half, almost all of them are collecting information on the communities that nonprofits serve, and less than half of them are collecting information on the board and staff leadership of the nonprofits,” explains a post by Philanthropy New York…
