GIA Conference: Engaging the Local Artist Community
The first morning of the GIA Conference in Detroit will kick off with an IDEA LAB presentation by writer and curator Taylor Renee Aldridge. Based in Detroit, Aldridge is also the assistant curator of contemporary art at the Detroit Institute of Arts and co-founder of ARTS.BLACK, a journal of art criticism from Black perspectives. She is one of over 100 Detroit-area artists, arts organizations, funders, and community members that GIA has engaged as part of conference programming and planning. Grantmakers in the Arts is relocating its offices to New York City in January, 2018 and is seeking to hire several staff positions. The next GIA webinar, Addressing Accessibility in Arts Funding Programs, Events, and Materials will take place on Tuesday, November 14, 2:00pm EST / 11:00am PST. Accessibility barriers that impact individuals with disabilities and older adults are often invisible to funders developing and managing grantmaking programs and grantee events. In this session, Anne Mulgrave with Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, Raz Rifkind with Chicago Community Trust, and Betty Siegel with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will discuss why accessibility is a social justice issue for arts philanthropy and how to identify and reduce barriers to access in funding programs, events, and materials.

The fall 2017 issue of the GIA Reader is now available online, with a special spotlight on the arts and funding communities of Detroit. Authors include Marsha Music, Sarah Rose Sharp, Roberta Uno, Tom Borrup, and more.
