Advocacy & Public Policy

Members of Grantmakers in the Arts have always been advocates for artists and arts organizations and we have long published and posted “why the arts” information in our online library and in the Reader. Our research over the years has provided advocacy tools and public policy information for those supporting arts philanthropy. In 2008, GIA’s board of directors made advocacy and public policy a new focus for the association’s work. As we place more programming resources into this area, GIA will seek the advice and participation of members who have been actively involved in advocacy with public entities, communities and decision-makers. Our goal is to provide resources and assistance to private and public foundations, public agencies and nonprofits so their engagement in advocating for the arts can be informed, strategic and successful.
